Four Tips on How to Be Resourceful in Times of Change


Many of us over the last two years have experienced major change in our lives, be it concerning employment, working from home, our health, not seeing our loved ones, not being able to travel as normal and generally having to adapt daily to changing mandates and restrictions in place due to the government guidelines concerning Covid -19.


Now more than ever it is essential to dig deeper and reflect on what our everyday foundation is built upon. Are we resourceful in times of changes or have we struggled at times to cope*?


With increasing pressure on the NHS and it becoming more obvious over the last few years that it is not always able to meet the increasing demands placed on it, it has become more important than ever to look at how we can all take care of ourselves and our health. How can we support our bodies to be healthy, flexible and vital and do our part in terms of maintaining our health and wellbeing particularly at this time of great societal change?


Four Tips to Be Resourceful in Times of Change:


1. Breath Awareness is a number one priority when it comes to having clarity of mind and body. It enables us to have objectivity, observation and space rather than reacting to life. It also offers a check-in moment, when we can observe the quality of our breath it can give us clues about how we have been moving through life up to that point. Nose breathing rather than mouth breathing is especially supportive for this and has been proven to be great for health [1].


Breath awareness is free, we can practice any time, anywhere and it supports the body and mind to be healthy and well. You do not need to sit or lie down to practice it, you can do it while you are cleaning your teeth, walking the dog or chatting on the phone. Simply, stop, pause, observe your breath gently entering the nose and leaving the nose. If you feel tired or racy then do it lying down. Make a note of how your breath and body feels.


2. Body Awareness: without this we often ignore the early signs of wear and tear, those niggles and pains until it is too late or it has become an excruciating or debilitating problem. Why wait? Build body awareness daily and it will be a fantastic resource to support everyday life. How do we do that? It has a lot to do with Number 1: breath awareness. When we take the time to observe how our bodies feel we offer ourselves and others space and this means we have the opportunity to get more of a sense of how we feel from the inside out. And so our body awareness develops.


When we cook, exercise, walk, get ready for bed are we thinking about other things or are we in the present moment? Are we being aware of how our bodies feel and how we are moving? Do we consider our posture, our gait, whether we are moving in a jolted, forced or rushed way or in a gentle and flexible way? Are we taking care of the body or ignoring it and just demanding it to do everything we ask of it? All of this is building body awareness. And if you need extra support (which we all do sometimes) we run 1:1 and group exercise classes, as well as offering body work, physio and massage sessions.


3. Being in the Present Moment: are we constantly thinking about the past or the future? How often are we really in the present moment? Many of us struggle with this, usually due to anxiety, stress or raciness - worrying if we made a mistake, forgot something, churning over past or upcoming conversations or situations, or thinking about the future rather than what is happening now. How do we be in the present moment? Well this has a huge amount to do with Number 1 and 2.


When we stay present with the observation of our breath and our body it is more simple to stay in the present moment. Our thoughts and brain are there to work in harmony with the whole body, in homeostasis and so not be the dictator or separate from our body, how our body feels matters and is worth paying attention to in full. Our mind and body can be balanced and we can build a wholeness that enables us to be responsive in each and every moment. Being in the present moment is a practice. It doesn't mean we don't plan ahead (e.g book a holiday, plan our meals for the week) but it can enable us to focus on what is needed in every moment and so develop a stronger relationship with how we are feeling, offering more clarity to make healthy choices and so enable us to be less exhausted and overwhelmed [2].


4. Move well: our mind and body are intrinsically connected [3]. Healthy mind, healthy body and so healthy body, healthy mind. So when we move well and establish a regular and consistent awareness of the quality of our movements, posture, gait, we enable a regular check in with how we are feeling and also develop the ability to refine, adapt and change our movements. And yes Numbers1, 2 and 3 all support 4 and enable a foundation to develop that can weather the storms and also have more vitality and resourcefulness in everyday life. Life itself is a series of movements including how we work, eat, sleep, talk and exercise so if we focus on the quality of our movements practically by observing our breath, body and staying in the moment, then it will have a direct impact on our quality of life.


All of these tips are free, simple and worth practicing to support everyday health and wellbeing and they are resources that can support our ability to be resourceful and resilient when it comes to change which is inevitable and impactful on our lives.


There is no perfect with life, it is all about learning and growing. That said we can develop a more steady foundation of health & wellbeing using the above four simple steps. Potentially it enables supports us to be adaptable and ready to respond to what life offers us.


Small steps make big shifts, every step made towards self-care and having an honest and responsive relationship with our body has positive ripples. This enables us to build a foundation of strength and steadiness, we build a deeper connection with who we are, how to take care of ourselves, what we are made of and what makes us tick. It is a life long journey.
